Challenges in the fight against HIV and TB in Ukraine during war were discussed in Brussels

“The war in Ukraine has not only disrupted daily life but has severely limited access to vital health services, particularly affecting people with HIV and TB. This crisis, intertwined with various social determinants, has amplified the challenges for marginalized communities, making them even more vulnerable.”- noted the Executive Director of TBEC during a meeting held in Brussels (Belgium) on the eve of the second anniversary of the full-scale war against Ukraine.

As part of an event dedicated to the situation with HIV/AIDS in Ukraine and the role of the EU in supporting the country in this context, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations, as well as government bodies working in the public health system, discussed, along with problematic issues, how the EU can help Ukraine strengthen its response to socially dangerous diseases in the current conditions.

“This may include establishing points of care equipped with portable diagnostic tools to reduce the need for travel and redirections, which is crucial in a war-torn country. Moreover, there's an urgent need to integrate mental health support across all medical and support services, recognizing the profound psychological impact of the war. Additionally, addressing gender issues related to mobilization is also vital, ensuring comprehensive care that considers the unique challenges faced by all Ukrainians during this time.” – emphasized Yuliia Kalancha addressing the event participants.
