On September 22, 2023, at the UN
High-Level Meeting on TB, the Political Declaration on Tuberculosis was
unanimously adopted by representatives of UN member states.
This is a strategic document that defines the global framework for the fight against TB over the next 5 years and is of a recommendatory nature for all UN member states' governments.
"The Political Declaration that we received as a result of the UN HLM on TB is a small but step towards strengthening the fight against TB from the standpoint of focusing on human needs and rights"- commented Yuliia Kalancha, Executive Director of TBEC - "It should be noted that this document became as such thanks to the continuous determined work of the global CSOs and communities in partnership with country missions. Today we have a good basis for advocating for the implementation of the recommendations defined by the provisions of the adopted political declaration. And learning from the lessons of 2023 will give us the springboard we need to work more effectively on the flight declaration of the next UN TB HLM."
TBEC representatives actively participated in the refinement of the text of the Political Declaration for almost five months, together with country missions, national stakeholders, and international partners. It was also the first time that Board members and Secretariat staff represented civil society organizations and communities in the WHO European Region in such an expanded manner at a key event in the fight against TB. And four of our colleagues were included in the national delegations to the UN HCA on TB:
● Vice-Chair of the Board Olya Klymenko and Executive Director Yuliia Kalancha became members of the official delegation of Ukraine,
● Board member Parvana Valieva joined the official delegation of Azerbaijan,
● Board member Oxana Rucsineanu joined the official delegation of Moldova.
We advocate for the rights of people with TB and amplify the voice of civil society at the highest level!
